Charlotte Is Her City - Charlene Henderson

IMG_0268

Understanding Charlotte is like understanding space. It has its own rhythm but outsiders love to explore, in many cases take over. The natives of Charlotte have welcomed us with open arms with this being their atmosphere, their space. And their invaluable knowledge on how to heal this city has in someways been ignored. From the onset of gentrification, the influx of those migrating from the North and the idealization of the Queen City being the new Mecca as Atlanta once was, those foreign to such a paradise have come in with a take over spirit instead of a bridging souls.
So this piece is near and dear to me as I write on one of Charlotte’s finest, a native of the city, Charlene Henderson. We met right before COVID, speaking once by phone, loosing contact in the midst of the chaos. She is one that we certainly missed out on in former elections because she understands the city better than most. Her queen spirit and tenacity toward change has made her a staple of the community. Speaking her mind, even ruffling some feathers at times, she deserves our respect as well as a seat on City Council at Large.

She fights for housing that’s truly affordable. She pushes the jobs issue and she is about making this community safe. She is about that life. A small business owner, single parent, advocate, she is “us” and Black Charlotte is proud to endorse Charlene Henderson for City Council Member at Large.
