I Have A Dream Too . . .

It was January 20th, 1986, 18 years after his death and the dream was still being deferred. It was during a time when the only songs MTV would play in Black culture were Michael Jackson and we stayed disillusioned in the lyrics of Billie Jean, being proud, “the kid is not my son”. It was when the crack epidemic was at an all time high; a street holocaust of sorts targeting Black faces like mine. It was the youth of Hip Hop and the rise of mass incarceration, as our now beloved President Joe Biden signed bills that kept my baby daddies locked up in mass incarceration. So, let’s not be so arrogant to think that Dr. King always had a holiday. It was only 36 years ago when folks rallied in the streets, Stevie Wonder creating songs, blind but still giving Congress some heat as legislation was reluctantly passed to get this day off, free at last? I may not be a fan but Ronald Reagan passed this day to honor the death of Dr. King, according to Google.
Well in 2022, I have a dream too, a single mother, whose had her ups and downs, who has faced employment discrimination, who took your stimulus check and can still barely get by. Yes, I have a dream, that is rarely listened to. That makes me the most targeted creature on the planet, I call her Black Women, while others call her boo. Yes I have a dream, that the voice of the churches will not be dominated by men and the term baby mama will be elevated as mother instead. Yes I have a dream, that folks would get there rightful pay and EVERYBODY would have a place to stay. I have a dream, that my lil’ brown, autistic child could play with your athletic, smart black boy without being teased. I have a dream that everyone would get they COVID shot so we can walk around in ease. Yes I have a dream that Black Men would treat Black Women with some sort of respect and Black Women won’t be gold diggers to every man they vet, yes I have a dream, that we can work together for once. Understanding slavery was 400 years because we didn’t put unity first. Yes I have a dream that we will stop killing ourselves, take over our school systems and start building our own wealth. Because I am Sojourner Truth, Harriett Tubman, even Dr. King’s Voice. I have a dream but first I have a choice. Power!!!
