Dear Dearest,

Dear Dearest,

I’m from Nashville and I am so excited that Cyntoia Brown has been released from prison after 15 years for murdering her sex trafficker. I have been following this case  but to my disappointment, I just read she married someone while in prison. She didn’t even give herself a chance to breathe.

I know you married someone in prison too. Why do y’all do this, instead of breathing?

Truly, “Breathe Through Your Nose”

Dear “Breathe Through Your Nose”,

Shout out to Black Nashville.

I am elated Cyntonia is released. Not only was her prison sentence unjust but we failed her like we do millions of Black people incarcerated. While she was in prison, I can only imagine how she felt. That would have anyone in a million tiny broken pieces. If love brought her life, I rejoice for her. I still have dozens of friends that support incarcerated spouses and lovers in prison and I have no judgement. God wants us to have life and have it more abundantly. I wouldn’t change one ounce of my experience even though some look at it as failure. You wouldn’t be here writing Dearest if I did. Praying for that sister. Every person that does something drastic like marrying in prison, deserves happiness not judgement. A Queen has been released. Let’s not get lost in her personal business. Plus he is gorgeous. Go girl!!!! Love to you Cyntonia. I’m working on my interview. So proud.

~ Dearest
