Construction of Race

I often wondered why I had such a light complexion in comparison to the rest of my family. My evidence has long been buried and the beautiful amber and indigo hues incapsulating my tribe was recognized uncannily. I never been in a high office where anyone ever cared if I was Black. But I was often called names as people often said my beautiful mother was just too Black.
So what is Black? A construction of similarities based on melanin. It is the physical evidence of the skin you are in. The powerful pigment that we all carry. I am so proud we got a Black Woman VP. Her black blood came from two different countries as her Indian mother and Black father intermarried.
Her complexion is like mine, her ancestors spread throughout the diaspora like mine, her attendance at an HBCU like me. Her loyalty in AKA as mine is to DST. The boat stopped in Jamaica first my dear friends full of people we know to be African. Know your history; Black is not just American but if you are Black and born on this land, you will be called African American. Harris is Black just like me. She has Indian blood, they say mine is Cherokee. She may not fit your definition of Black but if you know your history, all you need is an ounce and that's a fact. It's sad you come with your Black measure stick. You gave it to Obama but our denouncement is sick. We need to return to love and not the focus of race. It's the melanin that can not be erased. We should be chasing God instead of who looks Black because race is only a construction and those are the facts.
