Our Founders, My Sorors
When the world tried to take everything from me,
My house, my car, sometimes dividing my family,
I reflected on the day that I was “made”,
Illustrious, “Intelligence being the touch of Wisdom”, never again to be enslaved,
Wrapped in pristine crimson and showered in cream,
Laid in African Violets only fit for a Queen,
It was 1913 on January’s 13th Day,
When 22 melanated women had something to say,
Shame to the government for this is not in history books,
But it is the Black Woman that’s often overlooked,
Coming out of our Eden of Howard University,
These twenty-two women are very well known and versed to me,
Myra Hemmings, Ethel Cuff Black, Edith Motte Young were advocates that had our back,
Jessie McGuire Dent, Winona Cargile Alexander, Frederica Chase Dodd, collegiate women you probably couldn’t handle.
Osceola McCarthy Adams, Bertha Pitts Campbell, Marguerite Young Alexander, were called to break away from AKA’s mantle.
Zephyr Chisholm Carter, Edna Brown Coleman, Olive Claire Jones marched for suffrage but your Susan B. Anthony sat on that throne.
Jimmie Bug Middleton, Pauline Oberdorfer, Vashti Turley Murphy setting trends, living for public service and social justice to their very end.
Naomi Sewell Richardson, Mamie Reddy Rose, Eliza Pearl Shippen, their strength passed through Sorors in our fortitude pose.
Florence Letcher Toms, Ethel Carr Watson, Wertie Blackwell Weaver building the Black community for generations to believe “Her”.
Madree Penn White makes this group 22, the founders, the legacy, the vision only grew. Becoming the largest Black Greek Organization, with service as their claim when you see seas of crimson, you will be forced to say our name.
