The Bitter Sweetness of the Culture

Most of us over 40, felt Cheryl Lee Ralph's speech during her epic Emmy win for Supporting Actress last night. As Black Women, we have been passed, ignored and at times denied our rightful crown. It was long overdue, this Queen of the Culture, who has garnered the stage for as long as I can remember took the seat suited for a Queen. She belted out in a song of victory, not dismissing the climb during her acceptance receiving a standing ovation as Women of Color from all parts of the world paid homage. And never to forget creator, Quinta Brunson who has broke a barrier unlike any other Black Woman. These are breakthrough moments for the culture.
But in the midst of such jubilation, those under 30 felt the pain of loosing a young, prolific, hip hop artist named PnB Rock. Assassinated in a Nipsey Hustle style, Rakim Allen lost his life based on a possible social media post made from Roscoe's House of Chicken N' Waffles. It was a robbery that suspects stripped him of his Crown Jewels before fleeing the scene.
It is as if joy for melanated people is always cast with a cloud of pain. I believe these two moments on the very same day can teach us many lessons as we continue to be keepers of the culture. First, never loose sight of those laying the path such as Cheryl Lee Ralph. They are our Queens, our royalty. Next, lets protect our own with an unwavering persistence. How many rap artist must die? Lastly, we crown our own. Salute to you Queen Cheryl. May we protect you on the throne forever. And Rest in Paradise King Rakim, May your legacy in the hip hop game always be remembered.
