Is Affordable Housing Just Politics?

IMG_9300

Is Affordable Housing politics or is it just another joke of the times amongst the “have and have nots”? The numbers are questionable folks, with the outrageous prices for apartments, mortgages are looking like a dream of the past for many. Being “houseless” as advocate Leondra Garrett coins it, is traumatic, yet as of  April 30, 2023, there were 2,900 individuals experiencing homelessness in Charlotte-Mecklenburg.  2,900 individuals TRAUMATIZED! I am tired of candy coating this problem as I find myself in this equation. I have written about it, rallied about it but starting today I am going to fight about it.

I have been “houseless” for 3 years. The onset of COVID, followed by a two year tango of domestic violence led me in this very oppressive cycle. Thinking this year having a conventional job would provide me the stability I longed for, I found myself in a worst case scenario having serious health and medical problems, almost loosing my Medicaid, still living in the place where my abuser can find me to finally being laid off because of a non-profit funding issues. And guess what, I’m still “houseless”. Nonprofits get these grants to help us but many are only helping themselves. You can’t “black ball me” because I’ve adapted to darkness. I was once afraid. Afraid of the politicians who throw dirt on those that speak up, the mayor who every-time I write her team tells me it’s not her problem, leaders and advocates, bonafide ambulance chasers. I was afraid!!! I have been afraid to get on your bad side Charlotte because you love popularity but you can’t stand your own people. Father’s Day I’m calling you out. You ain’t doing what you suppose to do. You got to meet folks most basic need, freakin’ shelter!!!
So I’m putting Charlotte on front street, whose Affordable Housing entity is Inlivian. CEO, A Fulton Meacham, please return my calls, not your attorney. Reveal how much unused space you have and offer it to regular people, without titles like me. I will CC: a copy of this to your offices tomorrow.
Rev. Corine Mack President of the NAACP and Elder James Johnson of the Racial Justice Network please have my back. I have been denied use of a church at Charlottetown because of this black ballin’ Charlotte does. I am still on the waitlist for Inlivian. And my Victim Rights have been violated by the courts because a victim of domestic violence does not get space out of urgency. Gun violence, domestic violence, violence in schools, violence on the jobs all stem from trauma and it starts at home.
My last statistic, there are 13,527 organizations in the greater Charlotte metro area, including the cities of Charlotte, Concord, Gastonia, and Rock Hill within the states of South Carolina and North Carolina. If every organization houses just 1 with these grants and funding you running around with, how different our world would be. All is forgiven, just fix it.
 Dearest
