Juneteenth - New Chains
Dearest Price
Agape Voice
I usually write about the historical relevance of this day but today I will try to write about what I hope it will become. From past words of writer, Dearest, "On this day we celebrate getting played. You kept us in Texas in bondage when we were no longer your slave". Some came at me and said, we weren't slaves. I say we still are.
Last year, when this day was signed into a national holiday, I wondered if they were trying to get us to shut up about reparations, which are rightfully due to us. The discussion was on the floor but just like Harriett Tubman being on a $20 bill, the discussion faded away. Name one other group that has suffered the genocide of their people and who have not received such. Did they actually hoodwink us into believing that we were free•ish by stopping those talks and does our select memory keep us oppressed? Partying without any political consciousness, accepting this day without a cause maybe a Hansel and Gretel move folks . Watching them sell Juneteenth ice in Walmart by non Black Business was it for me.
Yet I still looked on social media as many celebrated the beauty of our culture. I am not mad about that but this was as the federal government has decided to terminate all free and reduced lunches for children starting June 30 and I heard nobody say nothing about that. We are partying in the wake of constant, consistent murders in our streets, our stores, our schools, our churches. Just last week it was an Alabama Church and most Black folks don't want to be registered Gun owners????? I don't get it. Our schools are not educating the way they should, widening the achievement gap every year. So what would I like to see Juneteenth be? I would like it to be a day of opportunity. A day when trades schools and entrepreneurs gather up our recent grads, giving them the celebration those before them never had. I would like to see more Black gun owners register their guns, be part of legislation because this is a battle not won.

Lastly instead of capitalizing on such a historic day, auction off unused community properties for a $1 so we can really own these states that we built. Free us from financial bondage!!! I ain't got time to dance when I'm homeless. I ain't got time to sing when I'm getting shot. I see this as a the time to organize conscious parties, on the backs of those that were so called emancipated last.
