From Rocking Bandana’s Like Aliyah to Sporting Bonnets Like “Little House on the Prairie” - Is This Style?

This is the “No-Judgement Zone”, where  culture will be explored, discussed and hopefully understood but never exploited. I have read and watched the posts of Auntie Mo’Nique talking to the babies about wearing the bonnets, slippers and head scarfs in the airports. I laughed because when my 17 year old daughter and I went into the shoe store yesterday, I saw a whole bunch of fluffy slippers being sold not as night or sleep attire but everyday wear by major branders. They are actually cultivating the stereotype of this Aunt Jemima brand and if we want to dig deep, I really don’t like anyone calling me Auntie but my only beloved niece because of these labels.
Now, I don’t criticize young people for their fashion choices as I so clearly remember Bill Cosby cutting down Young Black Boys for their sagging pants. Now where he at? There is a time and a place for everything and there is a thing called age appropriateness. Some celebrities wear such attire to make a buzz and control the culture, as seen with Cardi B and her dramatic style. Some of this is fun wear, while others may consider it glamorizing the welfare, EBT, single Black mother. I don’t like terms like “being ghetto”, especially being made by the elders. It didn’t land with Cosby and I am still waiting for the results of Mo’Nique. So, what do you think? I loved the age of Aliyah and DMX, bandanas and loose pants. I thought NWA, Pac and Biggie set that culture and it felt like a neo-revolutionary culture. So what’s my opinion? Let the young be young. Let them be creative setting their own trends. But teach them what’s behind it. I learned that sagging pants were about men rapping other men in prison. Maybe they wouldn’t rock it if they knew.

And stop slaying Mo’Nique. She is somewhat right. If you are over 25 walking around in bonnets and slippers you may need to investigate our history.
