“Bridging The Gap........Who Moved My Seat?”

Before I begin, I think another disclaimer is necessary..........

I, Nzuri Asha’, have so much love & respect for the elders of the community. My family taught me very well, however, I will definitely stand my ground.

So in my first blog that was written about the elders, I reiterated how important it is for the youth and elders to embrace each other as well as have some respect for each other.

Over this past weekend, the crew and I arrived at our designated area at an event that was being held in our community. As we were walking up to the table, we noticed an elder sitting at the table we were assigned to and just to make sure it was the correct area, I inquired through a staff member who was close by. The young lady expressed that the older woman had been sitting there for a while, and was trying to use the location for something else. I asked the young lady if it was possible to have another table w/chairs brought out to where we were and she called for maintenance but no one came.

Being that it was a very busy day, I had a feeling that no one would have time to bring anything extra so we decided to share with the elder. I proceeded to place the banner in front of the table, took out some flyers, placed them on the table and sat down.

Well everything was going smoothly until I began hearing the elder complain to those who were checking on her that she didn’t have any space & even asked me to move the banner! I replied to her and everyone else who began to question us, “I understand that we were running a little late getting here, however, we have been approved by individuals prior to this event and we don’t mind sharing because that’s what community is about.”

Over the years, I’ve learned that people have entitlement issues when they are placed in certain positions of stature. The elder was so angry and hateful about having to share that she got up and said she was ready to wrap it up even though the football game wasn’t hardly over yet. Some other ladies came over and listened to her “get her blood pressure up” and y t we still supported her cause by purchasing a raffle ticket. By the end of the 3rd quarter of the game, the elder had taken her things and left. As she packed up her items, I asked that her and those who listened to her rant, Have A Blessed Day & Keep It Peaceful!

The elders should have the mentality of love & peace in the community versus anger and disrespect.............

Peace Love & Light,
