As a woman who has been side by side with other women in all cultures as they journey through their pregnancies, seeing this video of Serena Williams hit home. Black women are found to be in a maternal health crisis and are dying 3 to 4 times the rate of white women!

'During my 10 years of being a CMA, I have been drawn to support women and children which brought me into the OBGYN field of healthcare. Within 6 years, I have witnessed failed inductions, cesarean sections for failure to descend, emergency cesarean sections for placenta abruption, preeclampsia and yes........even a death due to pulmonary embolism in a perfectly healthy 20 year old. All of these experiences were women of color. I share with you these examples to shed a light on how important it is for women of color to be listened to when it comes to their health.

“My OBGYN experience has allowed me to pursue and received certification to co-facilitate Centering Pregnancy groups through the Centering Healthcare Institute. Recently I have challenged myself to become a doula and have accomplished that goal. My ultimate desire is to serve all women, but am passionate about being able to serve the African American community and bring awareness to the care the African American women and teenagers need and deserve during this special time in their lives. I also strive to empower those same women to use their voices and make more informed decisions about their healthcare.”

According to the Black Maternal Health Caucus, under the leadership of Representatives Underwood and Adams (whom we are very grateful for), "while the rates of maternal mortality and severe maternal morbidity in the United States are unacceptable, even more concerning is the stark racial and ethnic disparities in these outcomes."

Nzuri Doula & Birthing Services focuses entirely but not limited to the moms of color who face these disparities before, during​ and post pregnancy. We provide a holistic setting for your delivery that includes aromatherapy, support for placenta encapsulation and pelvic health.
