Arrested For Parenting While Black
The recent arrest of Agape Voice’s own, Stephen Kernel Sings Sr. has everyone on our team mortified. Understanding his story and his profound come up is only one layer to why this situation of social injustice has us all up in arms. We at Agape Voice know Stephen to be a committed family man, putting his children and significant other first. So when we watched the video in horror, we knew that we must be one of the advocates to stand in front of this story.
Stephen was recently blown off, assaulted and tased by a Richmond County sheriff after his son was arrested at a football game. Being the dedicated parent he is, Stephen immediately dealt with the arrest of his son. Facebook Live coverage shows that Stephen calmly questioned an Officer by the last name Allen. He was reciprocated with a unprofessional, dismissive response and when he rightfully questioned the officer about his son, the officer immediately tried to arrested him. When is it that Black folks can’t question police, especially about their children. He was assaulted, tased and arrested. In this act of excessive force, the community at large is demanding answers, let alone Agape Voice.
We stand by our partner/client during this unnecessary, discriminatory situation. We will be blogging daily for Stephen until justice is served and Officer Allen is punished for his crime.
Stephen Sings Jr. is the author of an upcoming novel called Black Sheep.
