I think we’ve all heard by now that New York has legalized adult use cannabis. The largest cannabis legacy market in the country is transferring its 3-4 billion dollars a year in revenue into the legal market. Ending the prohibition of a vital medical treatment and eliminating one of the methods of mass incarceration is always a great move, but I’m not one to usually celebrate when a state legalizes the plant.
As a cannabis advocate, medical professional and champion for the rights of the Black community, you would think that I would always be excited with forward movement – but most states don’t get at the heart of why cannabis legalization needs to occur, and they leave me feeling like,
“Damn… We won, but ultimately: we lost.”
It’s a feeling I often experience as a Black person in America.
Every election season, you can catch me at the ballot casting my vote. It’s not because I fully believe in the political system established in this country. It’s because my ancestors shed blood for my right to vote (and to keep 45 ‘nem out of office). My sense of gratitude towards those that paved the way pushes me to do my part in the continued pursuit of progress. You can also count on me to negotiate for what I deserve in business and career situations, instead of bowing down to corporate America. I’m just wired to fight for what’s right. I spend countless hours educating the Black community on opportunities in the cannabis industry and participating in advocacy, to ensure we have our rightful place in this industry. If I’m completely honest, though, I’m often frustrated at the outcome and wonder if my efforts are in vain. I’ll still wake up and engage wholeheartedly in the work though. I do it because I know we, as Black people, deserve our place in this space. We have made significant, historical contributions involving cannabis, only for the prohibition of cannabis to be used as a tool to oppress us.

In response to the story of a Black physician, Dr. Susan Moore, who died from COVID-19 due to her medical team’s lack of adequate care and compassion for a woman of color, Vice President Elect Kamala Harris tweeted:
“This tragedy is all too common for Black women across our nation whose concerns and pain are often downplаyed or ignored in our health care system. We must do better. Our administration is committed to confronting these glaring racial health disparities.”
As a community that functions as individuals, Dr. Susan Moore’s fate will continue to be the fate of Black people. We educate ourselves and work hard to get to a position where we can take care of our loved ones and advocate for those who can’t advocate for themselves. We think we’ve pulled ourselves up by our bootstraps, and that we’ve made it to a level of success. But, what have we accomplished? How powerful are our accomplishments if we still have to beg and plead to be given adequate medical care when we are deathly ill? What have we accomplished if we lack power and are seen as disposable and not deserving of the same health, wealth and opportunities as other humans?
I’m an emergency medicine physician and I trained in my hometown, Detroit, Michigan. Working in the emergency department, I’ve seen a lifetime’s worth of people suffering and dying and I’ve been able to provide relief and life saving treatment to many. Despite my professional training and knowledge of how hospitals function, I sometimes find myself at a loss when dealing with the healthcare system.
Dr. Moore’s situation reminds me of an experience I had earlier this year. I, along with a family member, advocated for my uncle who was receiving subpar care at a hospital I trained in. Despite my advocacy, the hospital that I worked in as a medical student refused to give my uncle the same type of care I gave the patients I treated at that facility. Needless to say, I was frustrated. I was hurt. I was enraged. I spoke to the team taking care of my uncle. I spoke to the heads of the hospital. I had meetings and debates. The responses were inconsistent and lackluster. There was no true concern or urgency to provide reasonable care to a patient in need. The patient didn’t matter, the family didn’t matter and the advocacy of a trained Black physician didn’t matter. My uncle continued to receive subpar care and he departed this life without the medical treatment he deserved.

About “I Am Defining Me”: I Am _ is an affirmation that “I Am Defining Me” and I will celebrate myself by naming the many characteristics I personify. The creators of the I Am Defining Me movement name who they are, embody that definition and allow it to empower them to reach their goal of building health equity and generational wealth in the Black community, utilizing cannabis.
On the heels of the inauguration, the founders of “I Am Defining Me” fuel themselves and others with the strength of their shared identity with the future VP as they set about building health equity and generational wealth in the Black community. Professionals in a variety of industries, the founders have come together to ensure generational wealth and true wellness are finally realized for a people that have been disenfranchised since they arrived in this country. And what’s more, the tool these accomplished professionals are using is cannabis.
The creators of the movement, members of the Cannabis Health Equity Movement (CHEM) and 40 Acres And A Dispensary, believe that through their strategic planning, passion, and purposeful work they can create a “Wakanda” of sorts where the economy is built utilizing cannabis. Dr. Angela Ledbetter, MD describes her Wakanda simply as “unity” amongst her people and she believes that unity should be centered around “that vibranium we call cannabis”. Another leader of the movement, Dr. Ogadinma Obie, MD, describes her “Cannabis Wakanda” as “wealth, evidence-based medicine, and health consciousness fully restored to a benevolent community of the historically oppressed and allies”. Dr Obie believes such a country can be realized with “Vice President Elect Kamala Harris and President Elect Joe Biden being the leaders that move us toward the advancement of health, wealth, and community” and the movement plans to hold them to that seemingly idealistic task.
At iamdefiningme.com, the I Am Defining Me movement is inviting you to celebrate your shared identity with Kamala Harris, whether it be through your affiliation with an HBCU, your Black Greek membership, or your belief that Black people deserve the same health, wealth, and opportunities as all people. By celebrating your identity and making a donation to the movement, you will receive a unique I Am Defining Me apparel gift of either Historic, Divine or One designation to proudly wear on Inauguration Day with your head held high in unity with our Vice President Elect. With your donations, the creators of I Am Defining Me will continue to expand the work they do to:
INCREASE PARTICIPATION OF THE BLACK COMMUNITY IN THE FINANCIAL GAINS OF THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY (which is expected to reach $130 Billion annually by 2024)I Am Defining Me partners plan to facilitate increased industry participation by developing educational materials, experiential activities, resource guidance, workforce and entrepreneurial support services, and opportunities to influence legislative reform.
Behavioral flexibility seems to be the phrase of the season. All this reality with the pandemic and COVID-19 has taught me an amazing amount of behavioral flexibility, patience, and the ability to insert humor in situations or spaces that would normally be completely tense.
Focus On The Solutions and the Bright Side
Take for example what happened to me this week. I live in Atlanta, Georgia, and we had a very tough week with storms from hurricanes past week. One morning, we heard an explosion. I thought "Oh, great" - I knew exactly what it was… the transformer. So it was 7am and we had no electricity. A little bit of a challenge when you have a 6-year-old and are currently in the home schooling life. And not only that, because I had some work calls myself. So… no electricity, no Wi-Fi.
Some time ago I would've probably lost it. I would have cancelled most of my appointments and my son would have never been able to get into class. A hot mess! Luckily, I took some time to think about the situation. I had a replacement that was powering one electric entry, so I was able to charge my phone a bit. I connected my son to my hotspot and used my iPad myself. So, my son made it to his classes, I made it through my calls, and we took it with good humor. My son, my clients, and me!
Bonus: Having my son come in and out of the room wanting hugs and kisses, and my clients saying hi to him!
Five things you need to do to streamline your business so that you don't end up a scattered mess with no direction.
I don't know if you've ever ordered anything from Ikea, but if you have, you know that it can be quite frustrating.
You have a vision for a living space, you find the perfect furniture, so you order it and pick it up. You open the box and… the directions are in German? Well, let's assume you don't speak German, but you are going to try and figure it out anyway, right? You start putting things where they seem to go in, but it makes no sense.
If you are struggling with your business, you may be doing the same thing. Putting the pieces together without a real, general ideal of what's going on. You need instructions, guidance!
Today, I want to share with you the five shifts that I had to take in order to transform my failures into successes.
If you are the way I was when I first started my business, you probably have a lot of information you don't exactly know what to do with. I used to read a lot of books, listen to CDs, join Facebook groups, take courses, read articles, ask friends… just filling my mind with information that was sometimes conflicting, and in its majority didn't translate into results.
What it did create was confusion and a feeling of being overwhelmed, which then led to procrastination. I used to think to myself "I should be able to figure this out! I'm a highly trained medical professional…" But it actually felt like I was going in circles. If you can relate to this, this take this 5 things into high consideration:
#1 Forget Everything You Think You Know
Building a successful private practice from scratch made me think that I knew everything I needed to know to rock it in the virtual world. Oh boy, I was wrong. I had to come with a beginner 's mind.
I'm here to show you my green screen game!
I know there are a lot of great high-production videos out there, but this is for you if you are just getting started and you want to keep it simple.
#1 Setting Up Your Green Screen
Getting a Green Screen and Installing It
You don't need a luxury studio to set up your green screen. I have a small home office and personally use a wall mount.
Process is the bridge between idea and action.
Here are four things you need to solidify your processes, so you can take clear and effective action that will lead to rapid results in your business and life.

A process is a strategy. A pathway that gives you the steps to move forward. It's very important because a lot of the people who experience failure do so because they don't know what to do while working towards their goal.
How many ideas have you had that you never implemented for one reason or another?
I'm gonna break down for you the anatomy of rapid results.
We all know someone that always comes up with a great business or creative idea, and the next thing you know they have actually executed the idea. Meanwhile, you are still struggling with that first idea… or with no ideas at all.

Ever wondered what's behind the placebo effect? How can some people just say what they want and then have it show up for them?
Like that friend who says they never get sick and actually never get sick, or that person that raves and talks about how they want a certain thing or goal, and some time later what they wished for pops up in their life. You can be one of them.
I'm going to break down the relationship between belief declaration and positive expectation.

How do you deal with failure? We make up a lot of things about it. We make up what it means, and what it means about us. We surround it with a lot of negative emotions and limiting beliefs. In this video, I'm going to talk about how do you really handle failure in your life, and how to get rid of the negativity surrounding it.
Ready for positive belief change? Ready to get rid of the negative emotions, limiting beliefs and self doubt standing in the way of you living your best life?
Have you ever been in a situation in which you had something very important to say, and instead of saying it you just froze? ...Or have you ever experienced being more irritable when you didn't eat or sleep in a long time?
Your State
One of the reasons that mindfulness is so effective is that it helps people get control over their state. Now, when I say state, I mean mental state and emotional state. Most of us know by now that the decisions that are made out of anger, sadness, fear, guilt, and hurt are not likely the same decisions we would make if we had a centered mind. Decisions that you make when you are in a scattered mental state, unfocused, or tired, are sometimes not the best.
However, if you take the case that we have all the resources we need to succeed, then you know that in your best states (emotional and mental focused and empowered) is when you produce your best ideas and results.
We have all the resources we need to succeed.
I remember the very first time I took a call in residency. My senior resident told me that she had my back… but I couldn't stop being scared. We admitted 16 patients that night, and all the processes and responsibilities felt so new and scary.
At some point I just realized I wasn't going to sleep at all, and forced myself to accept the situation and focus on what was really important. I felt like a machine. It was magical how productive and efficient I became after letting go of all my worries and accepted reality.
I had the resources I needed, I just had to let go of my mental blocks.
We are taking inventory to identify your internal state. This means getting out of your head and into your body, to get you more connected to what's happening (that you may not be aware of.)
So, get comfy and let's get to work!
